#1 Convert class of an existing object

Is it possible to change the class of an existing object?  I created a remote I/O symbol using the block generator.  I created it as  "PLC" class, but later I thought it would be better to create a new "Remote I/O" class.  I've created the new class, but if I open the component in the block generator, the class is greyed out and I can't change it.

Not possible. You'll need to create it again.

Thanks for posting on the forum.

No, it's not possible to change the class of a symbol or component. You'll have to create it again.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Is it possible to open the object and then "save as" a new instance of it where you can assign the correct class or do you have to start from scratch?

It depends...

It depends if you are talking about an actual catalogue part (which belongs to a class and can not be moved from one class to another, as TimV needed to to) or if you are talking about a block that is used to graphically represent a component on the schematics.  In the later case, you can change that.  (Ex: Take a Pilot light block, open it, change the work object class is refers to ('Indicator', in that case...) and apply a 'Save As'...)

Tim,

Tim,

If you are looking to change the class to a block try this.

  • Open symbol block
  • On the tree view, select the block name and click the small arrow to open the block information
  • Double click the "work object class", then select the class you need this block to be.
  • Back to the block and save or Save as if you want to select different name.

Be aware that changing the class will take all the specs for the selected class.

Hope this helps to achieve what you need.

Hi there,

Hi there,

I just wanted to check in and see if it is still impossible to move a catalog part between class types? I have a few that I would like to move now that I understand better how I would like to organize things.

Thanks,

Austin

No yet...

Unfortunately it's still not possible.
